This typical 1-9/16" butt joint tongue & groove decking measures 1.562" thickness, necessitating the pattern be milled from eight-quarter lumber. The width can be machined to any desired size within the parameters of the molder or shaper used to cut the pattern. The simplistic profile comprises a 3/8" wide by 5/16" deep male and female joint with a .015" void left for lumber expansion and contraction during seasonal relative humidity changes. When two planks of milled lumber are joined, they create a simple butt joint.
