A floor or shoe rail moulding is best described as the bottom portion of the balustrade of a staircase that receives the vertical balusters or spindles, they can be mounted to the floor, or, secured into a wall and or newel post. They generally have a specific size dado milled into the top of the pattern to receive the same size balusters or spindles, small thin fillets are then inserted into the spaces left between the spindles on the bottom side of the handrailing and the top side of the railing.
